The Office for National Statistics has issued a report showing a ten per cent fall in greenhouse gas emissions in the UK over the twelve years to 2002. However, the fall is not reflected across the entire economy, with the transport sector increasing emissions by 47 per cent.
Within the transport sector, emissions from road transport have risen 13% since 1990 and now comprise 18% of total UK greenhouse gas emissions, compared with 14% in 1990.
Emissions from public transport such as railways, tubes, buses and taxis fell seven per cent. However, this was undermined by rises in emissions from road freight and aviation.
