The Department for Transport is seeking the views of stakeholders on the European Commission proposal to amend the EU Fuel Quality Directive. The proposed amendments would require fuel suppliers to reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions of fuels by 10%. In a related development, the European Parliament's rapporteur is calling on the EU to ensure the plans include biofuels sustainability criteria.
The Government believes that the amendments to the Directive would be delivered by a significantly increased uptake of biofuels.
Meanwhile, the Dutch MEP Dorette Corbey - the European Parliament's rapporteur on EU proposals to ensure life-cycle carbon emissions from fuels - said that the EU's plans must include biofuels sustainability criteria to prevent deforestation and water shortages. She said the criteria must be added to the law even though similar sustainability rules are being developed by the Commission as part os a separate EU biofuel promotion initiative.
The consultation seeks the views of fuel suppliers, biofuel producers, environmental organisations, non-road gas oil users and vehicle users are particularly sought. The consultation closes on 22 November.
