The Government will examine the scope for amending the existing RTFO scheme to take into account requirements under the Renewable Energy Directive according to its official response to a consultation on the RTFO which was published during March.
The Government was responding to the second part of the consultation into the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RFTO) which was intended to provide the opportunity for interested stakeholders to give feedback on issues surrounding longer term concerns on the future transposition of the Renewable Energy Directive and the Fuel Quality Directive. It also dealt with approaches to encouraging second generation biofuels and the treatment of biofuel made from tallow.
The Transport Minister Lord Adonis has indicated that a further consultation will be held later in the year in order to seek views on detailed proposals on the implementation of the Directives with likely legislation coming into force towards the end of 2010.
There were 89 responses to this latest Government consultation. A summary of the views of those who responded is published with the Government's comments to them. (See adjacent link for more information.)
