The Government has published its Low Carbon Transport Innovation Strategy (LCTIS) alongside the Energy White Paper. The LCTIS sets out an overall framework through which the Government aims to encourage innovation and technology development in lower carbon transport technologies.

The announcement includes:

- Up to £30m of funding for a new  "Innovation Platform" supporting UK low carbon vehicle R,D&D activites - combining DfT, DTI (Technology Strategy Board) and EPSRC funding.

- £20m of initial funding for a new programme supporting public procurement of lower carbon vehicles. The Government plans to consult over the summer on the details of implementation of this.

- A £5m per annum DfT contribution to a low carbon transport theme of the Energy Technologies Institute.

The LCTIS also contains specific chapters on the road, aviation, rail and maritime sectors - setting out in detail the technologies that can contribute to lower carbon transport and the steps the Government is taking to encourage them.
