Government launches consultations on integrated transport strategy, RTFO

The Department for Transport has announced a 'call for ideas' to inform an integrated transport strategy to set the high-level direction for how transport should be designed, built and operated in England over the next 10 years. DfT has also published a call for evidence about the future of the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO).

The Government is looking for ideas from organisations, 'frontline transport workers' and members of the public to inform future policy.

The integrated transport strategy will set out a single national vision which aims to:

  • put people who use transport and their needs at its heart
  • empower local leaders to deliver integrated transport solutions that meet the needs of their local communities

The call for ideas is available here. The deadline for contributions is 30 January 2025.

Meanwhile, the Government is also seeking input to a statutory review of the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO).

The RTFO is the Government’s main policy for encouraging the use of low carbon fuels in road vehicles, non-road mobile machinery (NRMM) and other surface transport modes. It works by setting annual obligations for fuel suppliers to ensure a certain percentage of their fuel comprises sustainable low carbon fuel.

The Government says that in 2022, the low carbon fuels supported under the RTFO achieved lifecycle greenhouse gas savings of over 7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e) as a result of displacing fossil fuels.

The RTFO consultation is open until 27 January 2025.

Zemo Partnership plans to prepare a response to both consultations, informed by members' views.
