Government fleets get £5m electric vehicle funding

The Office for Low Emission Vehicles has allocated an additional £5m direct funding for ultra-low emission vehicles to be used across 20 Government fleets. This forms part of a revised National Infrastructure Plan, launched by Treasury chief secretary Danny Alexander and transport minister Baroness Kramer and will allow every central government fleet to review its arrangements and consider how greener vehicles can be used.

The Government Car Service will be lead the initiative, which will be divided into two phases: the first round of 150 plug-in cars and vans will be procured in autumn 2014 with phase II expanding to the wider use of plug-in vehicles in the broad public sector.

Baroness Kramer said of the announcement: "Government must lead by example. Today’s investment will see government introducing a significant number of plug-in cars and vans into our fleets and leading the electric charge."

The Energy Saving Trust will provide expert advice to the different departments on which fleets should utilise these vehicles to be the most cost efficient.
