The Office of Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) has announced further details of the £35m funding competition through its ‘Go Ultra-Low City Scheme’ for up to four city schemes which to act as exemplars in promoting the uptake of ultra low emission vehicles (ULEVs), defined as electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Bids are invited from UK local authorities through an initial expression of interest deadline of 31 December 2014 and a process culminating in final bids by 31 August 2015. The measures which bids may consider include both hard measures including recharging/fuelling infrastructure, and soft measures such as public procurement, behaviour-related and community measures (e.g. car clubs).

Specifically, each bid should include measurable steps to achieve:

  • improved local air quality
  • reduction in carbon emissions
  • creation of ULEV-related growth opportunities for businesses both in the local area and beyond

The scheme forms part of the £500 million investment announced in May 2014 and which involves a variety of projects to establish the UK at the forefront of ULEV introduction.

LowCVP’s policy framework project for light duty vehicles is aiming to report early next year on a  range of potential complementary measures which may further stimulate the local ULEV markets and could be included in the City scheme proposals.
