CNG fuels will be opening the UK's largest compressed natural gas (CNG) filling station off the M6 motorway in Lancashire. Planning permission was secured and the gas filling station should be open by the end of the year.
The new station will be the first high pressure connected, public-access CNG filling station in the UK, capable of refuelling five hundred plus HGVs per day, or as much as 3,500 kg of CNG per hour.
The facility will also be able to supply 100% renewable biomethane
Philip Fjeld from CNG Fuels said: “Our customers can save more than 40% of their diesel cost, even after the recent drop in diesel prices, and cut CO2 emissions by more than 20% by using CNG. If fleets choose to fuel their trucks with Bio-CNG, they will be running on 100% renewable gas.”
Waitrose, part of the John Lewis Partnership, will be the principal customer for the station with a regional distribution centre located close by.
Update: It has recently been announced (28 Sept) that the LowCVP has been chosen to manage a gas HGV test programme for DfT which will benchmark all the latest gas trucks for emissions including methane, carbon dioxide (CO2) and fuel consumption.
