Two separate studies have reported significant emissions reduction for now cars by UK fleets.
Fleet World magazine has reported that new data from ALD Automotive has shown an average CO2 level of 150.6g/km in 2008 down from 2007 (155 g/km). The British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), who operate a combined fleet of nearly two million cars reported average CO2 emissions from fleet vehicles fell to 149.9g/km, from an average of 157.4g/km in 2007.
ALD's analysis also shows that in 2003, the average annual contracted mileage for company cars was 22,475 miles, but in 2008 the average had fallen to 19,049 miles - a reduction of almost 3,500 miles a year. Meanwhile, BVRLA reports a sharp fall in contract mileage, from 21,643 in 2007 to 19,617 in 2008. This is likely due to the increase in the price of petrol.
The BVRLA predicts the trend may not continue through 2009 as lease contracts are extended and the number of new cars being bought by lease companies declines due to the economic downturn.
