Fiat Automobiles, a part of the Fiat Group, says that it has already achieved the EU regulatory target of 130g/km set for 2015 because the average CO2 emissions of Fiat cars sold in Europe in the first half of 2009 fell to 129.1g/km. The new figure, which is corroborated by JATO, the leading provider of car industry intelligence, means that Fiat Automobiles is the first mainstream car brand to achieve the 2015 target.
Fiat says that an important contribution to this result came from the rapid growth in sales of natural gas as an alternative fuel for passenger cars. During the first half of 2009 around 65,000 cars powered by natural gas were sold by Fiat in Europe with an average of 115.8 g/km CO2 emissions, were sold in Europe.
The performance of Fiat Automobiles helped to reduce the overall CO2 performance of Fiat Group Automobiles to 132.9g/km.
