The Environment Commitee of the European Parliament has published a working document which opens discussions on a proposal for the European Union to move to a 2020 carbon emissions reduction target of 30% from the 20% target currently agreed.
The Environment Committee is the lead committee in the European Parliament on this subject. Rapporteur, Bas Eickhout MEP (Green), has drawn up the working document which emphasises the benefits of moving to a 30% cut. It uses research from a European Commission report published last year on the prospect of going beyond 20% plus other studies. Mr Eickhout hopes to have a Parliament vote on his draft report by June.
The MEP's draft parliamentary report will be published after the industry and energy committee has issued its own opinion. The industry committee is scheduled to adopt its opinion on 25-26 May.
Environment ministers could not agree on a 30% reduction target when they met in October 2010 and it is not known when the subject will next be on the ministers' agenda.
