The Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) has announced an inquiry into biofuels and the role that they might play in addressing the issues of fuel security and climate change. The Committee is also inviting comments to help a new inquiry into environmental labelling.
The biofuel inquiry will:
• explore the wider economic, social and environmental impacts of biofuels;
• examine the role biofuels might play in improving fuel security and reducing greenhouse gas emissions;
• review the policy arrangements for biofuels; and
• explore whether safeguards are in place in order to minimise negative social and environmental impacts.
The Committee says that it would particularly welcome comments on seven specific subjects which are detailed on its website (see associated link), although respondents can comment on any issues which they consider relevant.
The deadline for written evidence to be sent to the Committee (which should be by email) is 1 October 2007.
The Committee has also decided to set up a sub-committee to inquire into the issue of environmental labelling. The sub-committee is concerned that, despite the positive signal of many such labels, their proliferation might lead to consumer confusion, and undermine confidence in environmental labelling in general. The deadline for responses to the environmental labelling inquiry is 5 October.
