Energy Saving Trust report provides roadmap to a low carbon lifestyle

A new report from the Energy Saving Trust sets out a practical, down-to-earth vision of how the Government's carbon emissions reduction targets can be met. The EST says that people do not need to adopt austere lifestyles, or make unpleasant personal sacrifices; in fact, a low carbon lifestyle could improve the quality of all our lives.

The EST's 'Emission Impossible' report says that we could have more comfortable homes and better travel choices at the same time as protecting our environment. A low carbon future can be achieved, the report says, with a combination of existing technology, bold policy decisions and the right personal choices.

To provide its framework, the report uses the goal of an 80% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050.

On transport it says that everyone will need to become familiar with the concept of a 'travel hierarchy' in which people make more conscious choices about whether to walk or cycle, or take public transport. The cost of different modes of travel and the design of transport infrastructure will reflect this.

People will also have greater encouragement, and opportunity, to choose the lowest carbon cars in their class with a regulatory framework to ensure that low - or no - emission vehicles come to the market in much greater quantities.

Eco-driving should become the norm with dashboard technology becoming ubiquitous to encourage eco-awareness and more efficient driving behaviours. The report also suggests that speed limit enforcement can help to save further emissions.
