The Energy Saving Trust has announced the commencement of a new Low Carbon R&D Programme following formal confirmation from the European Commission that the programme complies with State Aid rules.

The aim of the programme is to support, through grant funding, the development of   new low carbon vehicle technologies that are in the critical pre-competitive stage of development.  The grants will encourage collaboration between central government, technology developers, research centres, operators and private investors.  It is also hoped that the programme will help stimulate the development of a supply chain and market to meet the need for more low carbon vehicles to be available to consumers and businesses in the UK.

The Low Carbon R&D Programme will offer grants of up to 50 per cent of eligible costs.  The first call for applications to the programme closes on December 12. Applications will be assessed competitively and in a similar way to the former Ultra Low Carbon Car Challenge.

The Energy Saving Trust announced the go-ahead for an alternative fuel infrastructure programme in July.

The Department for Transport are awaiting approval from the European Commission before other proposed Energy Saving Trust transport grant programmes can begin.
