Climate and energy policies will be among Germany's top political priorities when it takes over the presidencies of both the EU and the G8 industrial nations' group on January 1, 2007.
ENDS reports that Germany will ask EU leaders at their spring summit in March to agree a target to cut Europe's greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2020 compared with 1990 levels.
The Environment Ministry said that during its presidency, Germany would work hard to bring the airline industry into the EU emissions trading scheme and to further reduce CO2 emissions from cars.
