The UK government has announced funding of up to £1,500 for riders to buy electric motorbikes and scooters. Up to £7.5 million is to be set aside to boost the uptake for electric 2 wheelers and help riders bridge the cost gap between  electric motorcycles and conventional petrol versions.

Business Minister Matthew Hancock said: "Low emission vehicles are the future and show that we can meet our climate change commitments without giving up our cars or motorbikes. Electric motorcycles and scooters have got fantastic potential and can be a real force for good."

The government will be working with industry to finalise scheme details including funding levels and criteria anticipated for announcement and roll-out by this summer. The funding is being made available from the £500 million Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) programme for the period 2015 to 2020. Simultaneously LowCVP is working with a consortium of leading universities and member companies to investigate the potential for a UK market for other ‘L’ category vehicles in the 3 and 4 wheel light vehicle market.
