EEA urges policy makers to change attitudes on mobility management

The European Environment Agency (EEA) says in a new report that decision-makers need to rethink approaches to transport policy to pay greater regard to environmental consequences.

The EEA supports “realistic” measures such as pricing schemes for “unsustainable mobility” and supports the encouragement of changes in consumer choice to improve transport sustainability.

Other measures suggested include ensuring citizens are well informed about their carbon footprint when commuting or travelling on holiday, improving food labelling schemes by informing consumers of the life-cycle impacts of the food they eat. The Agency also supports the promotion of teleconferencing as an efficient way of cutting overheads and travel emissions, as well as individual travel planning and better land and urban planning.
