Stavros Dimas, the European Environment Commisioner, says that car industry leaders have confirmed that they are likely to fail to meet a target to reduce average new car emissions to 140 grams per kilometre by 2008/9.
According to a report in ENDS, the admission came at a recent meeting with Mr Dimas. "It is very probable – perhaps certain – that they'll not meet it," he said.
Mr Dimas promised extra action in 2007 to make sure the target is reached.
