In a long-awaited report, the European Commission has concluded that reducing the bloc’s carbon emissions by 25 per cent by 2020 would be more cost effective over the long term, but the Commission has stopped short of raising its target from the current 20 per cent level which was agreed in 2008.
The EC’s roadmap for moving to a low-carbon economy in 2050, lays out the policy steps for the European Union to achieve its goal of tackling climate change. Its contents have been hotly disputed by representatives of different interest groups.
The roadmap calls for the EU to cut domestic emissions by 80 per cent from 1990 levels by 2050 to avoid the worst effects of global warming. The most cost-efficient way to achieve that, the report says, would be for the EU to raise its 2020 reduction target to 25 per cent.
The European Commission has published a report for cutting emissions from the transport sector as a part of its overall roadmap. (See separate news story.)
