The European Commission has published Member State reports which outline the promotion and use of renewable energy sources including biofuels during 2009 and 2010. The UK's use of bioethanol and biodiesel increased UK renewable energy consumption in transport from 9.8 to 14.1 TWh between 2008 and 2010.
The EC's Renewable Energy Directive (RED) stipulates that each member state must report on renewable energy usage, including biofuels, every two years. Reports from 14 Member States, including the UK, France and Germany can now be found on the Commission’s transparency platform.
Renewable electricity use in the UK increased by 19% from 21.6TWh to 25.7TWh and renewable heat by 25% from 11.3TWh to 14.1TWh. The share of biofuels in road transport from 1.1% in 2007/8 to 3.3% in 2009/10.
The Renewable Energy Directive requires Member States to prepare bi-annual reports on progress in the promotion and use of energy from renewable sources. These reports describe the overall renewable energy policy developments in each Member State and its compliance with the measures set out in the Directive and the National Renewable Energy Action Plans of each Member State.
