The European Commission may appoint a commissioner dedicated to tackling the challenge of climate change according to a report by ENDS. The appointment would unite climate-related issues which currently cross several different departments in the Commission.
EU governments will nominate 27 new commissioners when the current commission's period of office ends next summer. The new President will have the final say in the decision on whether or not to create a climate portfolio but ENDS reports that there is now significant political momentum behind the idea. If a climate portfolio is established, the current Enviroment Commissioner, Stavros Dimas, is thought to be among the front-runners for the post.
