With existing policies the UK will achieve only a 10.6% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared with 1990, according to updated energy use projections from the Department of Trade and Industry. This compares with the Government's goal of reducing domestic carbon emissions by 20%.
The energy use projections were last published in November 2004 and are updated to include the latest assumptions on economic growth, fossil fuel prices and the impacts of existing measures.
As part of its review of the UK's Climate Change Programme, the Government is considering what additional measures need to be taken to put the country back on course to meet the 2010 goal.
