Learner drivers will need to answer questions about the environmental impacts of cars in order to pass their driving test after September 3 this year. From that date the UK driving test will feature multiple choice questions examining candidates on subjects from smarter driving (eco-driving) techniques to the emissions and safety impacts of higher speeds.

According to a report in The Times, the Driving Standards Agency is considering assessing a candidate’s ability to use a minimum amount of fuel in the driving test.  In tests conducted by the agency, motorists trained in eco-driving reduced their fuel consumption by an average of 8.5 per cent.

The key elements of eco-driving are driving as smoothly as possible, avoiding harsh and aggressive acceleration and braking. The Driving Standards Agency says that eco-driving is also safer because it involves adhering to speed limits.
