The DfT has published the latest review of the UK Low Carbon Truck Trial, highlighting progress of the 13 projects with over 300 trucks in service to trial low carbon technology in the HGV sector.
The demonstrations, funded through Innovate UK and the Office of Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV), support a range of HGV technology options and the supporting infrastructure required and have shown in the case of a bespoke Used Cooking Oil (UCO) technology, an 85% carbon saving on a full well-to-wheel (WTW) basis. A range of dual fuel methane powered trucks make up the vast majority of trucks in the trial with fossil and bio methane used in both liquid and compressed form.
The trial has also supported 10 new or upgraded gas refuelling stations in the UK with a further 15 planned for 2015.
The 2014 summary report gives detailed data on fuel prices and driver perceptions and identifies areas for further research into vehicle emission impacts, which are currently under discussion
Trials of Euro V1 vehicles have also been added to the scheme which will provide an important evidence base for any fleet considering gas power in the future.
The project will be meeting and reporting back further results at Cenex’s LCV2015 event taking place 9-10 September at Millbrook and supported by the LowCVP.
