D1 Oils, the UK-based global producer of biodiesel, has issued a call to environmental and development NGOs to end their 'generic condemnation' of biofuels and to be more discerning in their criticism. The company says that attacks don't differentiate between the best biofuel crops, like jatropha, and less sustainable ones based on palm and soya.

Speaking at the climate change summit in Bali, Karl Watkins, founder of D1said:  "Environmental and development NGOs are right to be critical of soya and palm that are produced unsustainably in areas such as Brazil and Indonesia."

D1 are calling for the wider adoption of Jatropha curcas and "other sustainable biofuel crops" for the development of biodiesel production in developing countries. Jatropha is an oilseed bearing tree that grows widely in many tropical and subtropical regions whose seeds can be crushed to produce inedible vegetable oil that makes high quality biodiesel. It can be grown on a wide range of soil types, including marginal land, and in drier areas than food oil crops like palm and soya.
