BMW and Volkswagen teamed up with Nissan-Renault to build a multi-standard Rapid Charge Network across a large area of the UK and Ireland. The initiative is part of European plans to support the growth of such networks across the EU.
The project promises to provide a significant boost to the already fast-expanding network of rapid charge points that can typically provide electric cars with an 80 per cent charge in less than 20 minutes. The companies say the initial €7m pilot project will be managed by Zero Carbon Futures in North East England and Ireland-based ESB.
The system will plan to support Level 2 charging for CSS, CHAdeMO, and AC charging methods. By the end of the year, 74 chargers should be online covering around 1,100km of major trunk routes and links to five seaports and five international airports.
