At an event hosted by The Campaign for Better Transport (CBT) the Conservative Shadow Transport Secretary, Theresa Villiers, outlined the Tory party's plans for cutting carbon dioxide emissions from the transport sector through "soft measures".

Local Transport Today reported that in addressing the CBT gathering, Ms Villiers said a Conservative administration would change the Transport Innovation Fund (TIF) into a Transport Carbon Reduction Fund in order to support walking, cycling and public transport projects.

Her speech focussed on ways of "greening" local transport.  In highlighting her stance on buses she said: "It is clear that increasing bus ridership is a critically important part of an effective strategy to make our transport system greener...if elected to Government, I would make the case vigorously for priority measures [bus lanes] with local authorities." She went on to emphasis that the party would also support travel planning, cycling, investment in the road network to reduce congestion, an end to out-of-town development and new high-speed rail links.

The CBT has invited each of the main political parties to spell out their policies to this end.
