Following the election of a majority Conservative Government at the General Election on May 7, the Prime Minister has made several new ministerial appointments who will take on responsibilities for low carbon transport, energy and climate change. Andrew Jones, MP for Harrogate, joins the Department for Transport team responsible for low carbon transport issues, including OLEV.
In other significant appointment for the low carbon agenda, Amber Rudd becomes Secretary of State at the Department for Energy and Climate Change, Ann Soubry is appointed minister with the low carbon brief at BIS while Damian Hinds takes on related responsibilities as Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury.
Andrew Jones is the MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough. Originally from Ilkley and educated locally at Bradford Grammar School and Leeds University, Andrew lives in Harrogate, and before being elected an MP worked in sales and marketing for Bettys and Taylors of Harrogate.
A passionate cricket fan, he has been a member of Yorkshire County Cricket Club for over 25 years, and has travelled to several countries following England’s overseas test matches.
He was appointed PPS to Business and Enterprise Minister Mark Prisk in November 2010. In 2011 he became PPS to the newly-appointed Transport Secretary, Justine Greening.
After Ms Greening's move to DfiD in the September 2012 reshuffle, Mr Jones became PPS to the new Chief Whip Andrew Mitchell. In March 2013 he was appointed by the Government as Apprenticeship Ambassador to Parliament with responsibility "for encouraging MPs to get involved in promoting apprenticeships in their constituencies and providing them with the information and advice they need to do so".
Following the 2015 General Election, Mr Jones was promoted to the position of Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport.
