Commission outlines new research and innovation strategy for EU

The European Commission has outlined the new EU research and innovation strategy which is to include measures to refocus R&D policy, ensure easier access to funding, end fragmented national research initiatives, create world-class research infrastructures and increase the leverage finance available to support R&D through the European Investment Bank.

The Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Maire Geoghegan-Quinn, indicated that the strategy will be discussed at the autumn European Council summit.

Further details also emerged on the “European Research and Innovation Partnerships”, launched under the EU 2020 Strategy. The Partnerships will aim to integrate existing initiatives, combine demand and supply side measures, focus results that will have significant market potential internationally, be based on a clear roadmap, and have a simple governance structure.
