The European Competitiveness Council has invited the European Commission to produce an action plan for clean and energy efficient vehicles. EU ministers indicated that any plan should encourage the development of a European infrastructure for new mobility technologies and in particular for battery recharging. The plan is due to be published in May.

The ministers highlighted the importance of improving technology performance and attractiveness of clean and efficient vehicles to consumers through increased levels of innovation and research and development.

The plan will also detail measures for standardisation in relation to electric vehicle charging infrastructure, as well as safety standards. The Council also wants the Commission to promote the global competitiveness of the industry. The Commission is due to publish its action plan in May 2010 before ministers meet at the 25-26 May Competitiveness Council.
