The first vehicle-to-grid (V2G) unit to be built and installed in the UK has been announced by Cenex. The installation is set for a home in Loughborough and was developed through the Ebbs and Flows of Energy Systems (EFES) project aimed at homes being powered by their owner’s electric vehicle.

Cenex is seeking to showcase the interaction of EVs as battery storage within a domestic property and how this feature can be incorporated into the wider energy grid.

EFES is a collaborative project through which the V2G unit was developed by Potenza Technology, a control unit by Moixa Technology, and the Virtual Power Plant (VPP)  by Cardiff University.

The £1.8m project is funded in part by Innovate UK and EPSRC and is due for completion over three years, with a delivery date of December 2017. Cenex is using project data to understand the business case for domestic scale V2G in the UK, and is confident this successful pilot installation can act as a catalyst for future innovation.

Robert Evans, Cenex's Chief Executive said: “Installation of the UK’s first domestic V2G unit marks a significant landmark for the country’s manufacturing and innovation, not to mention our efforts to move towards a low carbon economy.”
