Car club membership in the UK has increased rapidly in recent years to 23,000 according to data from four accredited car clubs - City Car Club, Streetcar, WhizzGo and Zipcar.
The data, reported by EDIE, comes from a quarterly report by Carplus, the national charity promoting responsible car use. London is fuelling the boom with 70 percent of the total - though the trend is also taking place in major cities across the country. Antonia Roberts, Carplus co-director, said: "We are very pleased with the data. This is the first time we have been able to present a national picture of car clubs". Carplus says it expects the figures to continue to increase strongly in coming months as new car clubs launch and existing clubs attract new members. Membership is predicted to hit one million by 2015.
