California is planning to sue the US federal government after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) denied the state’s request for a waiver from US law which it needed to enact its own car fuel efficiency targets. Fifteen other states or state agencies are reported to be set to join the action. In refusing California a waiver, the EPA said it wanted to avoid a confusing patchwork of different regulations across states. But opponents said that the EPA was delaying progress and acting in favour of the strong motor lobby which fears tougher fuel efficiency standards being enforced in different states of the US than have been agreed at the federal level.
California said that the EPA has so far "done nothing" to curb greenhouse gases and is frustrated by the EPA's denial of the state's request to implement its own emissions law - which would require a 30% reduction in motor vehicle greenhouse gas emissions by 2016 by improving fuel efficiency standards.
