The Energy Saving Trust is offering a hundred businesses a free review of their fleet operations to help establish whether they could benefit from switching to electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles. The announcement is the latest phase of the EST's Plugged-in Fleets Initiative (PIFI), which is backed by £280,000 of government funding.
The free service is available on a first-come, first-served basis and organisations are now being invited to apply through the EST website, with the first reviews due to take place from April.
The new initiative builds on a trial which the EST undertook last year with 20 organisations that found those switching to electric or plug-in hybrid fleets could cut fuel costs by an average of 75 per cent without any disruption to their services. The pilot initiative concluded that for most of the 20 organisations there was a strong business case for switching some or all of their fleet to electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles
The EST's Transport Knowledge Manager, Caroline Watson said: "For most businesses there are changes to fleets that can be made that will cut costs and are entirely sensible. It may be that it makes sense to switch part of a commercial fleet as electric or offer electric pool cars or company cars, and in some cases it is worth making the entire fleet electric."
The EST recently published a report about Plugged-In Fleets which reported the findings of initial trials.
