President Bush has called for a 20% cut in oil use by 2017 to reduce US dependence on imported oil. Giving his 'State of the Union' address, the President also talked about the "...serious challenge of climate change."
Mr Bush said that America stands on the brink of major technological changes. To reach the 2017 goal for reduced oil consumption, he said, the country "would have to increase the supply of alternative fuels, by setting a mandatory fuels standard to require 35 billion gallons of renewable and alternative fuels in 2017." Mr Bush noted that this represents nearly five times the current target.
The President said: "we need to reform and modernize fuel economy standards for cars the way we did for light trucks, and conserve up to 8.5 billion more gallons of gasoline by 2017".
