A British company has introduced a hydrogen filling station designed for installation in the home. ITM Power's 'green box' is claimed to be able to generate hydrogen for a fraction of the cost of other methods of hydrogen production. There are, currently, only three hydrogen filling stations in Britain. Establishing a full public infrastructure for hydrogen delivery would have a very high cost. ITM Power believes that a home refuelling system can bridge the gap.
The 'green box', developed by ITM Power, instead of using expensive materials like platinum to turn water and electricity into hydrogen, has created a plastic membrane that can do the same job at 1 per cent of the cost of the traditional membrane materials. It is claimed that a new membrane used in the system could consequently make hydrogen fuel cells more affordable and hence a real option for manufacturers and consumers.
