BP, Associated British Foods (ABF) and DuPont have announced plans to construct a bioethanol and high technology demonstration plant to work on the development of the next generation of biofuels. The $400m bioethanol plant will be built on BP's existing chemicals site at Saltend, Hull.
BP and ABF are taking a 45 per cent share in the Saltend project with DuPont, the US conglomerate, holding the remaining 10 per cent stake.
It is anticipated that operations at the new plant will commence from late 2009 and that the demonstration facility will have an annual production capacity of some 420 million litres from wheat feedstock. Around 70 full time jobs should be created. Initially, production will focus on bioethanol, but the three companies have indicated that they be examining the option of converting the plant to biobutanol once the required technology is available.
The plant is being given access to the existing infrastructure at the BP site for supporting services. The BP site in Hull has also been selected as the preferred location for a planned biobutanol demonstration plant, funded and owned equally by BP and DuPont which could produce around 20,000 litres of biobutanol a year from a wide variety of feedstocks.
