New analysis from a coalition of green groups calls on the UK government to 'take bold action' to catalyse the UK's transition to low carbon energy, transport and heating. The group comprising Green Alliance, RSPB, WWF, CAFOD, Christian Aid and Greenpeace, called on the Chancellor to do more to promote new investment in low carbon infrastructure.
The report proposes that the UK Government can embed a 'world class' low carbon environment that could mobilise significant investment streams, but only if current policy gaps and mixed legislative signals are addressed with bold action.
Renewables investment is expected to drop by 96% by 2020/21 and public investment in domestic energy efficiency more than halved last year, it says. The green coalition says urgent action is required during this parliament to reverse these trends and get the UK back on track.
To meet its low carbon commitments, the UK needs to allocate £2bn in additional funding for low carbon energy after 2020, as well as funding to scale-up low carbon heat technologies and continue to support purchases of ultra-low emission vehicles beyond 2018.
Raising investment in the low carbon power, heat and transport sectors now will benefit the whole UK economy, boosting jobs and local growth, they said.
Leah Davis, acting director at Green Alliance, said: “The autumn statement is an ideal opportunity for the government to show it is serious about action at home, providing much needed fiscal support for low carbon power, heat and transport.”
