The biomass taskforce, commissioned by DfT and Defra, has published its emerging findings. The report includes the call for biomass to be given a higher profile in the development of future energy policy.
According to Sir Ben Gill, head of the taskforce and former president of the National Farmers' Union, biomass production in the UK could help Britain to avoid 20m tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year. However, the Government needs to alter development rules and give a clear lead to the emerging industry according to the report.
The taskforce also believes that there is too little public awareness of the potential of biomass and that government and its related energy and environment agencies must work harder to communicate this potential.
The report also states that the long-term development of biomass "needs a strategic approach on biodiversity and other impacts".
The final report of the biomass taskforce is due to be published in October.
