Australia follows UK lead in publishing new vehicle CO2 emissions data

Australia has published its first full report on new passenger vehicle CO2 emissions following the example of data published in the UK. Australia's National Transport Commission identified the data gap which it says was inhibiting the Government's ability to form effective policy. The report, unlike its UK counterpart, publishes emissions data for each individual car brand.

The NITC publication, designed along the lines of the SMMT's annual report on car CO2 emissions, used data provided by Australia's Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

For the first time, the report provides detailed information of average emissions from new passenger and light commercial vehicles in Australia. The data in the report (to download, follow the associated link) is also expected to inform broader work being undertaken around climate change and the automotive industry.

The report shows that average emissions of new passenger and light commercial vehicles was 222g/km in 2008 (41% higher than the EU average), 12% down on 2002.

The LowCVP supported the publication by organising a series of UK meetings for a representative of NITC last year.
