Alternative fuels to succeed traditional diesel by 2050, EU report says

A report presented to the European Commission by the stakeholder Expert Group on Future Transport Fuels says that alternative fuels can replace conventional fuels across EU transport by 2050.

The stakeholder report says that a mix of biofuels, synthetic fuels, methane and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) can enhance progress made by electric and fuel cell vehicles to meet future demand from road, rail, aviation and maritime transportation. The report recommends that a range of alternatives are developed, as feedstock availability would probably constrain supply for a single-source fuel.

The Commission set up the stakeholder Expert Group on Future Transport Fuels in March 2010, with the aim of advising the Commission on the development of political strategies and targeted actions to replace fossil-based transport fuel in the long term, and decarbonise transport, while allowing for economic growth. Emissions from transport have been increasing across the region, constituting about 20 per cent of its overall greenhouse gas emissions output.
