Alexander Dennis and BYD of China have agreed a £660m joint venture to build up to 200 single-deck electric buses a year over the next ten years.
The deal was announced during the UK state visit by China's President Xi Jinping. The two companies are also in talks to extend their alliance to include double-decker buses, which could triple the deal to almost £2 billion.
The BYD-Alexander Dennis collaboration deal was signed by Wang Chuanfu, Founding Chairman of BYD, the world’s biggest producer of pure electric buses, and Colin Robertson, Chief Executive of Alexander Dennis. The partners said that their ultmate objective is to transform global transport systems to pure electric, emission-free buses.
Chief Executive of ADL Colin Robertson said: “It is a fine example of British-Chinese co-operation and two innovative companies working together to create cleaner, greener transport solutions. It is also important to recognise that it is initiatives like this that help us support 2,500 ADL jobs and a further 1,500 in our build partnerships around the world.”
BYD and ADL first indicated their intention to work together in July this year when the Chinese firm confirmed it had won an order for 51 full electric single deck buses for Transport for London.
