ADL and BYD partner to deliver largest electric bus fleet for TfL

More than fifty electric buses are to enter service in London as a significant new alliance has been announced between electric bus manufacturer BYD and the UK's Alexander Dennis Ltd to introduce London’s first large-scale, zero-emission, single deck bus fleet as part of a £19 million deal with operators Go-Ahead. This will also be the single largest fleet of full size electric buses in Europe. 

Go-Ahead London will introduce the 51 electric buses on the 507 and 521 routes, which link Waterloo to Victoria and London Bridge from autumn 2016, adding to the 22 zero-emission buses due to be on London's streets by October this year.

By 2020 Transport for London aims to be running 300 pure electric single-deck buses and 3,000 hybrid double-deckers in central London. In related news. The world’s first purpose-built purely electric double-decker bus will enter passenger service in London this year able to carry 81 passengers and has a battery range of 162 miles. 

Mike Weston, TfL's Director of Buses and chair of LowCVP's Bus Working Group, said: "I am delighted to announce that two further routes are to convert to fully electric operation - giving our passengers a quieter, smoother journey and also delivering significant environmental benefits. Electric buses represent another important step in our ongoing efforts to reduce emissions, significantly improving air quality in the capital."

The new Low Emission Bus (LEB) Scheme developed by LowCVP for the DfT, is open for bids now and supports a wide range of technology including full EV’s like these Plug-in or range extended, Diesel Hybrid and Biomethane, enabling any operator to find a low emission option suitable for their routes.
