5% considering buying an electric car: DfT new report on public attitudes towards EVs

5% of people are considering buying an electric vehicle, according to a new report published by the Department for Transport, while 56% said they had not thought about buying one. The study was carried out in February 2014, very shortly after the launch of the Government-industry 'Go Ultra Low' Communications campaign which was designed to boost EV uptake.

The main findings of the research indicated:

  • 5% said they were thinking about buying an electric car or van.
  • 56% said they had not thought about buying one.
  • 14% said that they had thought about buying one and decided not to.
  • 85% indicated that cost was the most important thing they considered when buying a car
  • 78% said reliability was the most important factor in buying a car
  • 66% said safety was the most important factor 
  • 53% claimed comfort was the main thing they looked for when buying a new car.
