Description:

The LowCVP Low Carbon Champions Awards 2012 will be presented at a gala event on Tuesday 29 January 2013 at One Birdcage Walk, Central London. The Awards celebrate examples of outstanding and innovative practice in accelerating the shift to lower carbon vehicles and fuels and reducing road transport emissions. The Awards presentation will take place following a celebration event to mark the LowCVP’s tenth anniversary.

The LowCVP Awards and Anniversary Reception are being held in association with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

There are seven categories of Awards reflecting the diversity of those engaged in encouraging the shift to lower carbon vehicles and fuels. There are also two special awards. The awards are for:

• Low Carbon Car / Van Manufacturer of the Year
• Low Carbon Heavy Duty Vehicle Manufacturer of the Year
• Low Carbon Vehicle Operator of the Year
• Low Carbon Fuel Initiative of the Year 
• 2012 Award for Low Carbon Innovation by an SME
• Low Carbon Road Transport Initiative of the Year
• 2012 Outstanding Low Carbon Publication or Report

The special awards are:

• Outstanding Individual in Promoting Lower Carbon Transport
• Outstanding Achievement in Low Carbon Transport over the last 10 years

Lord Deben (formerly Rt Hon John Gummer MP), the recently appointed Chair of the Committee on Climate Change will speak at the opening of the Awards presentations. As an MP, John Gummer was Secretary of State for the Environment during the 1990s and has been a prominent spokesperon on Climate Change issues for many years.

The Master of Ceremonies for the LowCVP Champions Awards will be Kate Bellingham. Kate is an engineer, TV and radio broadcaster - a former presenter of the BBC's 'Tomorrow's World'.

The LowCVP Awards winners will be assessed by a panel of expert judges drawn from the LowCVP's wide range of stakeholder organisations including: BMW, BVRLA, Cenex, Department for Transport, Energy Saving Trust, Freight Transport Association, Green Car Guide.com, Greenpeace, NextGreenCar, Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV), Ricardo UK Ltd, Road Haulage Association, Shell, SMMT, Transport for London and others.

Sponsors for this year's Champions Awards include: BAE Systems HybriDrive,  BP Biofuels, British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), Coventry University, the Energy Saving Trust, Michelin and Millbrook Proving Ground (Some Awards categories are still available for sponsorship. Winners of the 2011 LowCVP Low Carbon Champions Awards included: Nissan, Iveco, Stagecoach Group, Coca Cola Enterprises and Gasrec, Flybrid Systems, Whipcar and Element Energy. Stephen Joseph and Richard Parry-Jones were joint winners of the Outstanding Individual Award.

Nominations, using the form accessible through the microsite, should be sent to the LowCVP Secretariat no later than Friday, 30 November.

The LowCVP Low Carbon Champions Awards are accredited by the Royal Society of Arts (RSA).
